Things to consider when applying for compensation:
- Register with the Employment Service
On your first day of unemployment, you register with the Employment Service (Arbetsförmedlingen) as unemployed. The next day, your unemployment fund (a-kassa) receives information that you have registered as unemployed.
- Apply for unemployment benefits (a-kassa)
The application for compensation from the unemployment fund (a-kassa) and the income insurance are two separate applications. Registering for income insurance does not happen automatically when you register with the Employment Service and the unemployment fund. Contact your unemployment fund for more information.
- Arrange employer certificates (a form called "arbetsgivarintyg")
To prove that you meet the employment conditions for the insurance, you need to be able to attach employer certificates that confirm you have worked for at least 12 out of the last 18 months. Each calendar month should include at least 80 worked hours.
If you have submitted an employer certificate to your unemployment fund or if your previous employer has submitted an employer certificate via the service arbetsgivarintyg.nu, you can download the certificate by logging in to ‘Mina Sidor’ (My Pages) on your unemployment fund’s website.
Please note that Unionen’s income insurance cannot obtain employer certificates from the unemployment fund by you giving consent for information transfer (see more information about consent under point six).
If you have been self-employed, you need to attach work certificates for entrepreneurs or other documentation that confirms you have worked for at least 12 out of the last 18 months. Each calendar month should include at least 80 worked hours.
- Compensation from transition organizations or other income insurance
The severance pay (called AGE) complements the unemployment fund for those who have been laid off due to lack of work from an employer covered by a collective agreement. To learn more about the application conditions and AGE, contact the transition organisation you are part of (page in Swedish).
If you are entitled to AGE from TRR, TRS, or another transition organisation, or compensation from another income insurance, you need to attach the decision to your application.
- Activity Support/Grant from Försäkringskassan
If you receive activity support/grant, you need to submit a copy of your payment specifications with your application.
- Consent for Information Transfer
Shortly after submitting your application for income insurance, you will receive a notice from your unemployment fund (a-kassa). By following the instructions in the notice, you can give your consent for Unionen’s income insurance to retrieve information from your unemployment fund that is necessary to assess your eligibility for compensation. If you do not provide your consent, we cannot use automatic retrieval of the information needed for a decision. In that case, your application will need to be handled outside the normal process, and you will need to contact us.
Please note that Unionen’s income insurance cannot obtain employer certificates (a form called arbetsgivarintyg) or other documents from the unemployment fund, even if you consent to information transfer. You should attach your employer certificate when submitting your application for income insurance.
- Disbursement of Compensation
Compensation from Unionen’s income insurance is paid out through Swedbank’s payment system. If you do not already have an account registered, you can easily register your account (using BankID) with Swedbank. You can register an account with Swedbank’s account registry regardless of which bank you currently use.
Registering your account does not automatically make you a customer of Swedbank. If you have already registered an account with Swedbank in connection with other payments from the unemployment fund, a company, or an authority, you do not need to do it again. If you do not register any account, you will receive a payment notice, which may incur a fee to redeem.
